What Are Facial Fillers?

Facial or dermal fillers, also known as injectable fillers or soft-tissue fillers, are gel-like substances injected just beneath the skin to add volume or smooth facial wrinkles and creases. Most are made from hyaluronic acid, a compound that occurs naturally in your body. Most fillers also include lidocaine, a numbing agent, to minimize discomfort during treatment.

Filler formulations are made in a range of viscosities for different cosmetic purposes. Thicker formulations, with larger molecules, are used to add more significant volume to the cheeks, chin, or nose, for example, or to smooth deeper creases. Thinner formulations, with smaller molecules, are used to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, such as those that can form around the eyes or above the lips. Special formulations are used to enhance the lips with a density that matches the softness and flexibility of lip tissue.

Facial fillers work in two ways. First, they add volume immediately. Then, over time, the hyaluronic acid stimulates collagen production to help sustain the enhancements and restore your skin’s health and resilience.

Why You Might Consider Treatment with Facial Fillers in Beverly Hills

Facial fillers are a fast, convenient, and effective way of reversing the early signs of facial aging or enhancing other areas of your appearance without surgery or downtime.

Injectable fillers can be used to:

  • Soften or erase facial lines and creases, including deep forehead lines, the creases that can form around the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds and marionette lines), and the finer lines that can form above the lips or the sides of the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Add fullness and roundness to flattened or sunken cheeks
  • Fill hollowed areas under your eyes
  • Plump the lips to make them more alluring
  • Diminish the appearance of indented scars, such as acne scars
  • Give more definition to your chin or eliminate a chin crease
  • Improve the shape of your nose
  • Create symmetry among facial features

The results of facial filler injections are temporary. Depending on the formulation used and your metabolism, the improvements typically last from a few months to two years. When the results begin to fade, a refresher treatment can help extend their longevity.

It’s important to note that facial fillers will not correct loose or sagging skin. These injectable treatments are most effective at reversing the early signs of aging while your facial skin is still resilient. When your skin begins to droop and lose resilience, surgical options, such as a facelift, brow lift, or neck lift, may be a more effective solution.

Types of Facial Fillers

Juvéderm®

Juvéderm is a popular, safe, and highly effective line of hyaluronic acid fillers made in different formulations for specific cosmetic improvements. Juvéderm injections can smooth fine lines and wrinkles around the lips and eyes, soften deeper creases in the forehead or to the sides of the nose and mouth, and plump the lips. Juvéderm’s Voluma® is specially formulated to add volume to the cheeks. The enhancements made with Juvéderm injections can last for 6 months.

Restylane®

Restylane is another line of hyaluronic acid fillers, with special formulations that are effective in smoothing fine lines, softening deep facial creases, and plumping the lips.

Prevelle®

Prevelle is a less expensive filler option and made with a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid. Because the results appear quickly, with minimal post-treatment swelling, Prevelle is a great option for last-minute facial enhancements. Also, because the results don’t last as long as those of other fillers, Prevelle® may be a great option if you’re new to fillers and aren’t sure you’ll like the results.

What to Expect in a Facial Filler Treatment Session

Treatments with facial fillers are performed in our Beverly Hills DGMD Medi-Spa. We use a fine needle to inject precise amounts of filler into the locations targeted for treatment. Some patients describe the sensation as similar to a pinprick. If you’re concerned about discomfort or receiving injections in a sensitive area, such as the lips, we will apply a numbing agent to the area before treatment.

The treatment usually takes less than 15 minutes, depending on the treated areas.

What to Expect After Your Facial Filler Treatment

There’s no downtime after facial filler treatments. When the injections are finished, you’re free to go home, go back to work, or resume most normal activities. You may experience some minor swelling, bruising, or redness at the sites of the injections, but these effects are typically minor and resolve without intervention in a couple of days. We’ll ask you not to do any strenuous activity and not to lie face-down for the first day after your treatment.

Most patients see immediate results from dermal filler treatments, but it may take up to two weeks for the full results to settle into the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions About Facial Fillers

The results of facial filler treatments are temporary. Depending on the filler used, the location of the treatment, and your metabolism, results can last for a few months or up to two years. You’ll want to come back to our practice periodically for refresher treatments to maintain your results.

Yes. Treatment with facial fillers can be combined with other medi-spa treatments. Botox® injections can smooth lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions. A chemical peel can improve skin texture and brightness. Microdermabrasion can help to restore skin resilience. When you come into our Los Angeles office, we can help you determine the non-surgical solutions that will best help you maintain your youthful appearance and achieve your goals.

Dermal filler injections are offered by a wide range of practitioners, including many with far less medical and cosmetic expertise than our medi-spa specialists. While the injections seem simple, quick, and convenient for patients, they require a deep understanding of facial anatomy and aesthetics to perform safely and to create attractive and natural-looking results. Your face and your appearance are too important to be trusted to any but the most skilled and caring medical experts.
