Blepharoplasty in Beverly Hills, CA

Our eyes are one of the first features that other people notice about us. Making eye contact with someone is so important since the eyes enable us to communicate and connect with others. If you are self-conscious about how your eyes look, it can interfere with your ability to feel confident when meeting or interacting with people. It is natural that as we get older, our eyes begin to show signs of aging. If your upper or lower eyelids are puffy, drooping, or have excess skin, cosmetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, may be the solution. Eyelid surgery can be performed as a stand-alone procedure, combined with other procedures, or part of a customized facelift.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also referred to as eyelid surgery, eyelid enhancement, or eyelift, is surgery to correct sagging and puffiness in the eyelids and the area just below the eyes. Skin laxity and fat accumulations in the eyelids can make you look older than you feel or look tired even when you’re feeling rested and energetic. Eyelid surgery corrects these problems by removing excess skin, tightening muscles, and removing unwanted fat.

Choosing Blepharoplasty in Beverly Hills with Dr. Golshani

Dr. Golshani is a double board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who takes a highly customized approach to each cosmetic facial procedure. The eyes, in particular, are key to projecting personality, beauty, and energy. Dr. Golshani understands the subtle nuances of what makes the eyes look bright, attractive, and in harmony with a person’s other facial features. He uses his tremendous skills as a surgeon and his deep understanding of facial anatomy to create natural-looking plastic surgery results, tailored to bring out the best in each patient’s appearance.

You might consider eyelid surgery if you’re bothered by droopy or puffy eyelids or bags under your eyes. These changes can make you look older than you are, tired, or unhappy. Sagging upper eyelids can also interfere with your vision.

Blepharoplasty can correct:

  • Droopy or puffy upper eyelids
  • Sagging lower eyelids
  • Excess skin and noticeable wrinkles in the lower eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes

The subtle changes made through eyelid surgery can be truly transformative. You’ll look younger, happier, more refreshed, and more energetic. If sagging upper eyelids have blocked part of your field of vision, you will be able to see more clearly after the surgery.

Eyelid Surgery Approaches and Options

It’s important to note that sagging upper eyelids can be caused by drooping eyebrows, another change that can occur with aging. You can see this for yourself by standing in front of a mirror, placing your fingers on your forehead, above your eyebrows, and gently raising your eyebrows. If lifting your eyebrows corrects your upper eyelid sagging, you may need a brow lift instead of or in combination with an upper eyelid lift.

Depending on your needs, Dr. Golshani may recommend surgery on your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

Upper Eyelid Lift

In an upper eyelid lift, incisions are made along the natural folds of the upper eyelids, where the resulting scars are hidden when the eyes are open and camouflaged when they are closed. Through these incisions, excess skin, muscle tissue, and fat are removed to raise, thin, and smooth the eyelids.

Ptosis Repair Surgery

In some cases, tightening the upper eyelid muscles can correct drooping. This is a functional, rather than cosmetic, repair. It can be performed in combination with an upper eyelid lift, using the same incisions in the creases of the upper eyelid, or it can be performed using incisions inside the eyelids.

Lower Eyelid Lift

In a lower eyelid lift, incisions are hidden below the lower eyelashes or inside the eyelid. Excess skin and fat are removed to raise the lower eyelid and correct puffiness.

Lower Eyelid Fat Removal

When the problem is excess fat in the lower eyelids or bags below the eyes and loose skin and muscles are not concerns, lower eyelid fat removal may be the solution. In this procedure, incisions are made inside the lower eyelids, through which the excess fat is removed.

Depending on your needs, Dr. Golshani may recommend combining eyelid surgery with other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as a brow lift, facelift, or neck lift. Dr. Golshani is a true expert at customizing a series of procedures to help you look naturally younger and fresher.

Eyelid surgery can also be combined with non-surgical treatments, such as laser treatments and chemical peels, to improve skin quality and eliminate areas of discoloration, such as sunspots or age spots, freckles, or acne scars. Other non-surgical options include Botox, fillers to enhance contours, and facial thread lifts.

Planning Your Los Angeles Eyelid Surgery

Your consultation with Dr. Golshani is a critical step in planning your successful eyelid surgery. A patient coordinator will meet with you briefly before Dr. Golshani joins the consultation and will stay in the room to take notes on what is discussed and decided. Dr. Golshani will ask questions to understand your treatment goals and review details of your medical history. He will then examine you to assess the resilience of the skin in your eyelids and the extent of fat accumulation.

Based on your goals and what Dr. Golshani learns from the examination, he will recommend an approach to the surgery. He will explain what you can expect throughout the process, how to prepare for surgery and care for yourself after, your likely outcome, and your risks.

Dr. Golshani will answer questions about the surgery, and the patient coordinator will meet with you afterward to answer all your non-surgical questions. It’s Dr. Golshani’s goal to ensure that you have all the necessary information to make an informed decision about the surgery and that you understand what your role will be in preparing yourself for the procedure and caring for yourself after.

Are You a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery?

During your consultation, Dr. Golshani will inform you of whether you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery, and if so, what approach he recommends.

You are probably a good candidate for blepharoplasty if you:

  • Are bothered by the drooping or puffiness in the eyelids or bags below the eyes
  • Are in good overall health
  • Do not smoke, or can quit smoking for six weeks before and after the surgery

The ideal candidate for any plastic surgery procedure, including eyelid surgery, has realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery and is aware of the risks.

How to Prepare for Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Golshani will provide specific instructions on how to prepare for your surgery. These may include measures to take in the weeks before surgery, such as stopping smoking and fortifying your health, and short-term measures, such as discontinuing certain medications and avoiding herbal supplements in the days just before your procedure.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Los Angeles Blepharoplasty Procedure

Eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, usually using local anesthesia so you feel no discomfort and a sedative to help you relax. As with all our surgeries, it is performed in our state-of-the-art surgical center, the Rexford Surgical Institute, which is in our building on the same floor as our office.

Incisions will be made in your upper or lower eyelids, following the plan that Dr. Golshani has reviewed with you in your consultation. Through these incisions, Dr. Golshani will remove excess skin and fat and tighten eyelid muscles, as needed. The procedure usually takes between 45 minutes and two hours.

You’ll be released after the anesthesia has worn off and you are fully alert. You can go home with a trusted friend or family member to drive you.

What to Expect After Your Eyelid Surgery

You should plan to rest at home for the first few days after surgery. We recommend that you have someone you trust stay in your home with you for the first night to assist you. You can expect some swelling and bruising in the first few days. Keeping your head elevated and applying ice will help minimize swelling and promote healing. Any discomfort you experience can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Other short-term effects after the surgery may include dry or watery eyes, sensitivity to light, or double vision.

Dr. Golshani will provide thorough instructions on how to care for yourself as you recover and when to return for follow-up visits.

You’ll be able to resume light activity in about a week. Most patients take 10 days to two weeks off work to allow swelling and bruising to subside. If your job involves extended screen time, you may want to request modified duties or a part-time basis until your eyelids have fully healed. You may need to take more time off if your job involves physical exertion. After about six weeks, you can begin to resume more strenuous activity.

The results will be visible once the initial swelling resolves and will gradually improve over the following weeks.
